I was saving up Fuel to craft some Swords, when CON announced the new content will be out before Christmas. I realised that anything I Craft (or find) will be fairly useless compared to even Greens at level 45, so I shifted my play style to maximise finding Fuel and Books, and away from Crafting and finding Uniques.
I wasn’t paying close attention but I estimate that I was finding about 50 to 70 Fuel per day and 20 from my Generator (40 every other day). Then about three weeks ago it seemed like my Fuel finds dropped by 50% overnight. I can’t prove how much Fuel I was finding before the Thanksgiving event, but I can prove how much I am finding now, and it’s a pathetic 30 per day NO MATTER HOW MUCH I PLAY.
So I started keeping track of how much Fuel I found, when and where I found it. Then I took out my Peak Oil 18% (since it seems useless) for four days, and then tried some Peak Oil 50% (22hrs) for another 4 days. And these are my results:
NOTE: Each point is a SET of missions completed in one hour, usually 3 to 5 level 30+ manual missions, and occasionally 10 low level auto missions to get Ammo. The divots below zero are missions sets that yielded no fuel so they can be more easily seen.
1. There is a daily Fuel limit of 30:
Once you get 30 Fuel (unless you equip a Peak Oil) you WILL NEVER GET MORE FUEL NO MATTER HOW MANY MISSIONS YOU PLAY. If you are playing for Fuel (like me) you might as well quit and come back when the new ‘day’ starts. I’m ABSOLUTELY SURE that this was recently reduced from about 60 per day.
2. Fuel finds are on a fixed day irregardless of how or when you play:
When I started, I was logging days at midnight PST (my local time), but by the third day it was glaringly obvious that there was something ‘magical’ about 4:00 PM. Finely timed experiments showed that the exact time that my chances of finding Fuel ‘reset’ was about 4:20 PM PST. I guess this corresponds with GMT (aka UTC), plus about 20 minutes to clear out people who started missions at 3:59 PST (11:59 GMT).
3. Low level Peak Oils are almost totally useless:
With one small anomaly, a Peak Oil 18% yielded NO REAL FUEL BENEFITS. I suspect that this might be because Fuel only comes in units of 10, and ALL Peak Oils lower than 34% would add less than 10 fuel to the already paltry 30 daily allotment. When the daily limit was 60(ish) this was less of a problem. Notice how the extra fuel is not rounded up or down, but instead floored. Before I started the chart I had about 5 days of napkin notes and every day was 30 Fuel WITH a peak oil 18%,
4. High percent Peak Oils LOWER your chances of finding Fuel while INCREASING your daily maximum:
Without Peak Oils I would get my 30 Fuel in one set of missions exactly at 4:20. Sometimes I would get all 30 in ONE MISSION, then NOTHING even if I ran fifty more missions that day. With Peak Oil 50% I noticed that I would find MORE Fuel daily, but it would take me MORE missions to find it all, sometimes 3 or even 4 sets over 4 to 6 hours.
5. A timed Peak Oil can be stretched across TWO different ‘game days’:
Since I was doing my timed Peak Oils in late evening/early morning but my local ‘game days’ were at 4:00 PM I also noticed that timed Peak Oils that spanned two ‘game days” would give a bonus IN BOTH of those days. In the chart this can be seen from me activating a Peak Oil 50% AFTER I hit my daily Fuel allotment, and then getting my bonus Fuel. Look at the raw data and compare it to the chart. It happens 4 times in a row. If you don’t span your timed Peak Oils across two ‘game days’ (and play during both of them) then you are cheating yourself .
6. Two timed Peak Oils can be used in the SAME ‘game day’.
If a timed Peak Oil expires during a ‘game day’ it seems as though the game thinks the Fuel you found is reduced to the daily max of 30. If you then activate ANOTHER timed Peak Oil, it will again raise your maximum findable fuel minus that 30. You are NOT penalized for using two timed Peak Oils in the same ‘game day’. Notice that the day I got 70 fuel was from two DIFFERENT Peak Oil 50% being activated (and played) at different times during that day.
7. The Fuel Generator has NO effect on daily Fuel found:
At first I though this might be my problem, but varying when I collected from my Fuel Generator (before or after daily max found) made no difference. (I took my Fuel Dump times out of the raw data since it was irrelevant and misleading.)
8. Maybe it’s just me? :
I have considered that something has changed so that ONLY I have 30 findable fuel per day, while most other people still have 60. The only three things that come to mind is that:
* I am now using the White Flag
* When I started the chart I had over 1300 Fuel.
* I now have a Fuel Generator (before I didn’t)
If you get punished with less daily Fuel finds for things like these it would be nice for CON to mention that. I would rather find 30 more fuel per day than have to bother with the stupid Fuel Generator which only gives 20 more. Raiders never bothered me when I DIDN’T EVEN HAVE a fuel generator. :P
9. Other Other thoughts:
I wonder if other ‘limited’ things like Uniques follow the same ‘game day’ formula. Keep in mind (from what I’ve read) every time you find a Blue or Purple, there is a FIXED chance it will be ‘promoted’ to a Rare or Unique, So all you have to do is keep track of your Blues/Purples and note when you get more or less. Maybe that will be my next project (after I go outside in the sun a little bit.)
10. Questions for CON and other players:
It would be nice if CON answered #8. I’ve read a lot of threads lately about people noting that about three weeks ago Uniques suddenly got more rare and crafting became more difficult. Is this a systemic ‘crudifying’ of the game or perhaps a minor oversight in the random number generator, or people just being paranoid? (Although I’m SURE the daily findable was decreased.)
I’d also love to know from other players if you too are only FINDING 30 fuel per day, or 60ish, and if so, are you using the White Flag, Low Peak Oils, and/or have a lot of stored Fuel?
